AM NOVICE PROGRAM

Fitness, Technique & Fun!

Photos by Anthony Lim

The Novice Program consists of (i) beginning rowers who recently completed learn-to-row or who have rowed less than a year, and (ii) rowers with more experience in the sport, but who are looking for a fresh start, perhaps after a long break. The Novice Program will allow new rowers to learn both sweep & scull skills in both single boats and boats of all sizes. The Novice Program typically includes rowers who are just getting started, up to more experienced novices who are thinking about racing. Whether your long-term rowing goals are purely recreational or more competitive, the Novice Program has you covered. All LMRC programs are open to all gender identities.

Prior to Novice Program practices, the Coach will set boat lineups and distribute them to the team. Team members will gather, launch their boats together, and complete the daily workout, with the Coach providing support and instruction from an accompanying launch. Typical Novice Program sessions will:

1. Provide further instruction on the basics of rowing (and how to use the boathouse) as learned in Community Learn to Row classes.

2. Focus on rowing fundamentals (grip, posture, body sequence).

3. Drills to advance rowing technique to advance from a beginner to a skilled novice who is comfortable rowing in any size boat with more experienced rowers.

4. Work on improving rowing strength and endurance.

Max Raskin

Novice Coach

Max signed up for learn to row through LMRC’s Laney College grant program. He was hooked from day one because rowing combined all his favorite things: water, community, birds, physical challenges, and the need to work together. He started rowing with the novice team and he now rows with the intermediate team and cox's for any team that needs it.

Currently he is enrolled at Samuel Merritt University, getting his masters degree in Occupational Therapy. His favorite foods include laminated dough, haiga rice, and anything cooked by his girlfriend/Lake Merritt’s Number One Fan, Dana Croteau. Max has a cat and a bunny and will talk to you about animals anytime you like. Or rowing. Or anything else, really.
