YOUTH RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

Lake Merritt Youth Rowing (LMYR) is a recreational, non-competitive program that offers youngsters, ages 13-18, the chance to try the great sport of rowing on beautiful Lake Merritt in the heart of Oakland!  Participants in our recreational program will build technique and skills in a fun, safe environment without any competitive focus.  Absolutely no rowing experience or knowledge is needed!

Dates:

JUNE 15 - 19TH
JULY 20 - 24TH
AUGUST 3 - 7TH

Monday through Friday (1 week)
10:00AM - 1:00PM daily

Cost (1 week) - $150 per rower

Athletic Waiver (Athletic Waiver in Spanish)
Completed Swim Test or Online Swim Test Waiver*

* The City of Oakland Aquatics department is unable to offer swim tests at city-run pools during COVID-19 closures. Any Lake Merritt Youth Rowing participant who has not submitted a completed swim test to the program in the last two years will be required to either wear a life jacket provided by the program or have a parent or guardian complete this online swim waiver form in order to participate.


Coaches

Our coaches this Summer are:

  • Connie Weyhenmeyer: Connie has been coaching youth and adult teams of all skill levels for over 20 years. She began coaching at Lake Merritt Rowing Club in 2009 and currently coaches the LMRC Recreational Team and Learn-to-Row classes. 

  • Selena Cortez: Selena is excited to return for her fifth summer coaching the youth camps. She rowed all four years at Berkeley High Crew where she was stroke seat of the Varsity 8+. Currently, she's a student at Cal State Sacramento. Every summer she looks forward to getting the next generation into rowing.  

  • Phoebe Dedlow: Phoebe rowed for 4 years at Berkeley High and finished her first year rowing at Washington State. She loves the community that rowing provides and is so excited to be coaching learn to row camps this summer! 

  • Rose Lightfoot: Rose is returning to the Bay Area this summer after spending her high school years as a coxswain at Choate. In the fall she will continue coxing at Brown University. She is looking forward to getting kids out on their lake for their first time. 

  • Eliana Haigh:  Eliana, is a coxswain for the Men's Team at East Bay. She has been rowing since middle school, and plans to attend St Marys College of California in the fall. Being part of an amazing team, racing competitively, and gaining valuable skills through the sport is why she loves rowing.
